Full results from Langdon Hills

What a great finale to the Golf season!

Unexpectedly lovely weather and a good turnout despite a few late withdrawals

Langdon Hills once again proved to be the perfect venue for the last day, giving everyone a chance of scoring well and making a late charge for the Player of The Year

Had the greens been in good condition I reckon the scores would all have been a lot higher still!

Results

Lenny finally came good, with all the lessons paying off and coming in with an amazing 43 points to win the day

Lester scored 40 points to take Runner Up spot, with Darren McAlister’s 38-point total bringing him 3rd spot

Keith Fisher scored well, with 37 points, and then Sam, Kevin, and Gavin with 35 points

Mark Stewart came next with 34 points but was clearly more interested in the more specialist areas, winning the Nearest the Pin, the Par 3 King (on countback with Pants) and also wining the Longest Drive! Thankfully, Mark narrowly beat Richie! For the record, had Richie won then this experiment would be over. However, as he did not, and as we now seem to have quite a few big hitters in the Society I think it is time for the the Longest Drive to be re-introduced for next year

The Team Competition was won by the team of Lester Trevor and Keith, who with Kevin’s card as the ghost player came in with 98 points!

Player of the Year

We had a number of players who were in with a chance of catching the pre-round leader Gary P who had 107 points on the board

Gary only needed to score more than 25 points to improve his position. Well, he managed just 26 points and so finished on 108 points

Although this is the second lowest total to win PotY it was just enough to see GP literally limp over the line as our Player of the Year for 2021

Mark Chris and Lenny all ended on 106 points. A case of “so near yet so far”!

Mark was given 2nd place, with Chris in 3rd and Lenny 4th by virtue of their 4th and 5th scores

Gary becomes the first player to come last on the final day, but still be crowned PotY!

Next Year

Due to the hangover of the lockdown periods experienced earlier this year we could only manage 6 Golf Days. I plan to get back to 7 Golf days next year (plus Le Touquet making 8) and I will confirm the dates and venues over the winter

If anyone has any suggestions about courses to play, or changes to the format, feel free to email me. There have been many changes to the rules over the past year or so, all designed to make the game easier to understand, and to speed up the pace of play, and most have been adopted by the Society in good spirit

The one area which remains contentious (as it always will do) is the system of handicaps. I am keen to make sure the Society remains fair and open to all to have a chance of winning

As you all now know, the concept of a handicap has been replaced by an index with the idea that the index is then used to apply the slope for each particular course you play

So, as a society we need to decide how we wish to adopt and implement the new system, or do we carry on as we are?

Here are my thoughts. I would welcome any comments:

  1. We need to agree on what handicap system we wish to use. This could be a Club Handicap, or for those who are not club members, then using a system such as Golfshake or English Golf etc. We will start the first round next year with the handicap
  2. Do we then have a system for cutting winners and giving shots back for the lower scores? Or do we leave it for Golfshake etc to look after the handicaps for us as these will then be a truer reflection as to the current playing ability of each player, as this would take into account any rounds played between our golf days? To my mind, this is the fairest method by far. It means that at the start of every golf day, all players will be as close to the way they are playing at that time
  3. Do we apply the slope for each golf day? It will be a bit more admin on the day but given my recent numerical mishaps (sorry again Lester!) I would be appointing a handicap Tsar to help me!
  4.

Rule changes

I feel the new rules changes are helping the flow of the game and certainly have taken a lot of the confusion out of certain situations, so thank you all for taking them on board in such a positive manner
